{"id":707,"date":"2022-09-22T17:03:02","date_gmt":"2022-09-22T17:03:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.community-choirs.co.uk\/wordpress\/?p=707"},"modified":"2025-10-27T11:32:17","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T11:32:17","slug":"the-ageing-female-voice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.community-choirs.co.uk\/wordpress\/2022\/09\/the-ageing-female-voice\/","title":{"rendered":"The Ageing Female Voice"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ageing affects all voices, and often in ways that we perceive to be negative, based on our experience of our own younger voices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The vocal folds dry out in a similar way to other mucous membranes &#8211; often leading to a feeling of sticky residue requiring coughing to clear.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Muscles can atrophy with lack of use, leading to a weaker voice that is less easy to control<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The larynx can sit lower in the throat, leading to a higher tension on the vocal folds, making the perceived range lower.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Laryngeal cartilage will calcify over time, and the muscular joints operating the opening and closing of the folds become stiffer leading to problems closing the cords completely leading to breathiness.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After a long period (years) of non-singing or quiet conversation during post-menopausal years, the folds can atrophy and thin and \u201ccurve\u201d leading to an inability to close completely.\u00a0 This will make the voice sound weak, breathy and lead to breaks in the range, and a lack of control or \u201cyodelling\u201d (sudden unexpected pitch change without intention) and a lack of vocal stamina.\u00a0 This is called glottal or glottic insufficiency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is important to understand that all these are the natural effects of ageing and insufficient exercise in the vocal cord muscle group.&nbsp; They are not a sign that there is anything wrong with the throat or voice, and should be viewed as a wake-up call to get things moving!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>HOW CAN I TREAT THIS?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on your age, and willingness to undergo surgical treatment, there are operations that can be done.&nbsp; You should talk to your GP, and ask for a referral to an ENT appointment, where you can discuss the issues you are experiencing.&nbsp; There is a voice clinic in Queen\u2019s Medical Centre that you may be able to get a referral to, and the specialist practising there is Mr Julian MacGlashan who is the best in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those who are not keen on chasing through the medical profession, there are several things you can do at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Practice closure of your larynx:<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Take a deep breath and hold it.\u00a0 Keep that breath held and then swallow.\u00a0 After swallowing, cough.\u00a0 Repeat 10 times.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inhale and hold your breath tightly.\u00a0 Bear down as if you were having a poo (sorry for the indelicacy!), and whilst bearing down, swallow. Repeat 10 times.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take a breath.\u00a0 Hold it as you bear down for a few seconds.\u00a0 Release gently.\u00a0 Repeat 10 times.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hold your breath tightly.\u00a0 Put both hands under your chair and pull up as if trying to lift the chair with you in it.\u00a0 Let go of your breath gently whilst saying, \u201caaaahhhhh\u201d.\u00a0 Relax and repeat.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hold your breath tightly.\u00a0 Turn your head left.\u00a0 Let go of the breath with a gentle \u201caaaah\u201d whilst the head is turned.\u00a0 Relax.\u00a0 Repeat with head on other side.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can also perform simple exercises at home:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Put a wide straw into a half-full bottle of water.\u00a0 Hum a simple tune through the straw, making the water bubble.\u00a0 Do this for at least 5-10 minutes.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sing along with your favourite songs &#8211; don\u2019t worry about whether you can hit all your notes, just enjoy singing along.\u00a0 Sing every day without exception.\u00a0 Sing until your voice and throat feel tired.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Drink a LOT of water.\u00a0 Not tea or coffee, which will dry out your mucous membranes, but constant water.\u00a0 Buy yourself a pretty water bottle and keep it by your side constantly.\u00a0 Aim to drink at least 1.5 litres of water per day.\u00a0 We are aiming at keeping your mucous membranes moist and supple, and they need water to do that.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Talk a lot!\u00a0 Keep your voice in constant use, and don\u2019t consciously try to be quiet.\u00a0 Every time you exercise your voice, you are making a step towards vocal health.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vocal warm up exercises are good &#8211; ask your choir leader for some suggestions if you don\u2019t know any yourself.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most importantly &#8211; don\u2019t feel angry at what you\u2019ve lost.&nbsp; As we all age, our bodies and voices change, and reflect our journeys.&nbsp; Sing with the voice you have now, whatever you think it sounds like.&nbsp; Remember that this is the same voice that sang to children, took wedding vows, gentled animals and shouted in strength.&nbsp; Be kind to yourself and your voice.&nbsp; Celebrate the journey that it has taken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It isn\u2019t the same as when you were 20, but that is part of the beauty of it, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DON\u2019T.&nbsp; STOP.&nbsp; SINGING.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your voice is beautiful, with all of its strengths, weaknesses, breaks and breathiness.
